The food and drink we consume represents the spiritual nourishment we receive from the experiences we have in the world.

The digestive system begins high in the body, in the mouth, because we experience the world most of all through our senses which are in our head. Our teeth represent our ability to solve problems, in order that the experiences become more digestible. The taste of the food or drink represents the emotional character of the experience.

The food or drink passes down the oesophagus, which represents the experiences going from our senses and brain in our head down through the nervous system to our heart and the nerves in the rest of our body. The processing of the food or drink by our stomach represents the processing of our experiences by our heart.

Then the food or drink passes into the large and small intestine, from where nutrients pass into the bloodstream. This represents us receiving spiritual nourishment, from the experiences.

Finally, the waste products are expelled at the other end of the body. These represent the proportion of the experiences which we are unable to use for our benefit.
